Hello, my name is Shayla Day, and I have been tattooing full time since 2010. Tattoos and tattoo culture have always been fascinating to me, even as a small child, I always thought the idea of a permanent piece of art on your skin was the most amazing concept. I began my apprenticeship at For Ink Sake Tattoo in Atascadero, CA in June 2010. Under my mentors Kris Wood, Reef Trujillo, and Jonathon Smith, I apprenticed for nearly a year before tattooing full-time. Prior to my apprenticeship I studied Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Digital Arts, and Geology at Cuesta College’s North County campus. The start of my apprenticeship (and later career) was a product of luck and good timing. While getting tattooed by Jonathon Smith, my mother off-handedly mentioned how much I had always wanted to become a tattoo artist, and he asked to see a portfolio of my work, as he was currently looking for a reliable apprentice. I brought in a large stack of drawings and paintings in various mediums, and began my apprenticeship two weeks later.
I worked at For Ink Sake Tattoo in Atascadero, CA for two years, during which time I attended an eight hour OSHA training course featuring Cathy Montie. In September of 2012, I took a brief hiatus before I began working at Never Enough Tattoo in Atascadero, CA. I was a full time tattooist at Never Enough for roughly a year and a half before leaving in early April, 2014. After another short hiatus I began work at Cherry Blossom Tattoo Studio.
I specialize mainly in color work, including animal portraits and fantasy themes. I am proficient in black and grey work, cover ups, realism, traditional, neo-traditional, and script work. I try to be well versed in many styles and themes, and am constantly growing and learning. I am also an artist outside of the tattoo world, using many mediums including water color, acrylic paints, colored pencil and charcoal, all of which have aided my application and technique in tattoo work. I work using both coil and rotary tattoo machines, such as; Mickey Sharpz, Bishop, and custom machines from builders around the country. I predominantly use Eternal Ink, and all inks and pigments I use are 100% vegan. I try to use only the best and highest quality materials and equipment.
I look forward to continuously growing and advancing in this ever-changing career. It’s been one heck of a ride so far, and it’s just getting started. Thank you for your time!
